Thank you to my grandparents for inspiring this post. The other day we were sitting in their kitchen and entertaining the idea of making a few changes to the décor. Not huge structural changes, but a switching up of colors perhaps. They have lived in the space for over ten years now and were able to hand-pick everything since it was built from the ground up. The point my grandparents made, which I’m sure is very true for many homeowners in the same situation, is that while you are trying to decide on items for the home (such as kitchen cabinets for example) you tell yourself that if you’re not in love with something you can always change it in a few years to come. But once everything is in place and you get settled into your home those changes rarely ever happen.
And that is why paint is your best friend. Many kitchen cabinets are composed of materials that can be painted over for a makeover. A new color and new hardware can do wonders for your kitchen and is a much cheaper option than replacing the existing cabinetry. The look we’re loving is black. I’m typically partial to white kitchens but there is something about black that grasps me. It’s just so very sleek.

If all black cabinets are intimidating to you, try just painting the bottom ones or just the kitchen island. Designed by John Lum Architecture of San Francisco, CA via Houzz.
