One of my most memorable Christmases is the year I was in 8th grade when my grandparents bought me a Dooney & Bourke It Bucket Bag in Periwinkle. That thing was the shiznit and I felt pretty darn cool to be toting it around at school. It was my first taste of designer brand fashion and needless to say I’ve been a purse girl ever since.
If you’re not yet on board with the idea of splurging on a designer handbag you truly love, let me be the one to convince you otherwise. Unlike shoes, a well-made handbag and especially a leather one, will last you pretty much forever. The way I think of it is, instead of a lifetime of purchasing new purses every season, or year, or whatever your schedule is, why not invest in ONE bag that will last you for the rest of your life? If you think about it, the amount of money you would spend on a bunch of cheap ones would just add up to one of high quality anyway.
Now, you can’t spend that kind of money on something fuzzy or printed or shiny and expect to love it for the rest of eternity. You’ll eventually want to burn it or throw it out the window if it’s too obnoxious for every day use, not to mention be hitting yourself once the trend fades. Instead I recommend a neutral leather bag in a classic silhouette. I’m also talking no fancy buckles, sequins or studs here. Find a simple well-made piece, treat yourself, and be prepared for the years of handbag companion bliss to come.
Totes from top left: Natural Selection Tote from Marc by Marc Jacobs // Michelle Tote by Tory Burch. Red is bright for everyday but can be great if you wear lots of neutrals // Saffiano Leather Tote by Michael Kors // Leila Tote by Vince Camuto. Don’t be intimidate by the blue. It’s a color that doesn’t go out of style–kind of like how jeans will always go with everything.
Satchels from top left: Sac De Jour Small Leather Tote by Saint Laurent // Claremont Drive Marcella Crossbody Tote by Kate Space New York. This is actually a very light pink.
